Second wave distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated mosquito Nets kicks off

The second wave of the distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets (LLINs) kicked off this week in various parts of the country.

Earlier this month, on July 6, the Minister of State for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, Margaret Muhanga officially launched the second wave of the LLIN distribution campaign. She advised the top leadership of 15 districts in Eastern Uganda to mobilize the communities ahead of the distribution.

She urged the leaders to pass ordinances and bylaws against people found misusing the mosquito nets.

In a related event, on July 5, the Minister of State in charge of General Duties, Hon. Anifa Kawooya underscored the need to focus on prevention, advocacy & awareness creation at community level. She made the remarks during the Regional Advocacy & Sensitisation meeting for Launch of LLIN Campaign in Mbarara District.

About 28.5million mosquito nets will be distributed during the current mosquito net campaign which was launched as part of this year’s World Malaria Day activities.

Malaria is a major public health problem associated with slow socio-economic development and poverty and the most frequently reported disease at both public and private health facilities in Uganda.

According to the Global Fund, having continuous coverage of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is a key component of malaria elimination. The Global Fund is committed to maintaining affordability of nets and ensuring their sufficient supply. The Global Fund actively supports investments in innovative and next-generation nets.

We work with grant-implementing partners such as the Government of Uganda (as represented by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health) to understand their demand and programmatic needs over the grant cycle.
